She was 'the chick' to begin with; just an ordinary giggly girl, and then the things that happened to her turned her into the heroine that John Connor needed as a mother.Quillershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00148636009202550512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-75391319919901371402012-12-19T20:54:18.067+00:002012-12-19T20:54:18.067+00:00Sally, I agree and think Ripley an excellent thril...Sally, I agree and think Ripley an excellent thriller heroine for that era. And I also agree with Becky's suggestion/choice of Sarah Conner. She was lean and athletic and must have spent a lot of time in the gym. Maybe in more recent times, reasonably worthy movie heroines have been the likes of Lara Croft who certainly provided action and humour but there doesn't seem to be any stand-out movies and characters that come to mind in the mould of Ripley.Noelenehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12189586588231645515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-62454958495177797272012-12-19T18:02:34.820+00:002012-12-19T18:02:34.820+00:00Ripley is definitely one of my heroes too. And there was a BBC show in the late 70s/early 80s I loved, Blakes 7, that had a lot of strong female characters.

While there are sometimes female characters in more recent movies who can get close to being that good (like Trinity from the Matrix) or on TV (Buffy) few of them really work as well rounded characters, who grow and change like Ripley or Sarah Conner. What went wrong? How could we have gone backward not forward? It's kind of sad.BeeCyclinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03112685054452735536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-13054374213810366812012-12-19T14:46:32.248+00:002012-12-19T14:46:32.248+00:00I know what you mean, Carol. But it shows that a character can still have the audience behind them, even if they're not perfect.Quillershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00148636009202550512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-77806835519955131512012-12-19T14:09:55.722+00:002012-12-19T14:09:55.722+00:00Great choice for a heroine - these were great film...Great choice for a heroine - these were great films, really scary and atmospheric and gritty. Ripley, as you say, was a rounded character - I admired her and was rooting for her throughout the plots but I can't say I liked her particularly, or at least only sometimes. Shows that you can have a heroine who has a good and less 'nice' side.Carol MacLeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17893946748914418193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-62674008947352377582012-12-19T09:24:31.303+00:002012-12-19T09:24:31.303+00:00Thanks Chrissie! It's a great device for getting rid of gender expectations.Quillershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00148636009202550512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327129601484697455.post-61507686204027821992012-12-19T09:21:27.833+00:002012-12-19T09:21:27.833+00:00Interesting post Sally. A romance? Not at all but a worthy heroine anyway!Chrissie Lovedayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10183822415068255476noreply@blogger.com
